An Investment Opportunity North Country Fair Trade is seeking loan capital from committed individuals to support the development of Maquiladora Dignidad y Justicia, a Fair Trade apparel production workshop in Piedras Negras, Mexico. Dignidad y Justicia (Dignity & Justice Maquiladora Company) is a joint venture of Comite Fronterizo de Obrer@s (CFO), North Country Fair Trade (NCFT) and individual worker/owners. The CFO and NCFT each have a 30% stake in the business and the group of workers has a 40% ownership stake. Dignidad y Justicia is conceived as a pilot business development project with the goal of establishing a network of small worker owned production shops that would produce primarily for sale to a Fair Trade consumer base in the United States. The establishment of an initial apparel workshop will test the viability of this model as a means of providing employment to workers who have lost their jobs when assembly plants in Piedras Negras and other Mexican border cities closed, or when they are dismissed from their jobs for activism in pursuit of workers rights. Our vision is to create an alternative production and marketing system that can provide sustainable wages to employees based in Mexican border cities. The CFO and NCFT have a strong commitment to the creation of a financing model which will establish a modest revolving capital pool that can be applied to the start-up of additional workshops in the future. Dignidad y Justicia is a collaboration between a seasoned Mexican non-profit that has a firm membership base among maquiladora workers in Piedras Negras and other border cities, a for profit marketing business that will seek out buyers for potential products and a group of determined individuals who have substantial experience in the production aspect of the apparel industry.
