Dignity & Justice Maquiladora Co. The Maquiladora Dignidad y Justicia (Dignity & Justice Maquiladora Co., or D&J) is a fair trade start-up clothing production business that makes mostly organic cotton products for export to the United States. Dignity & Justice was created in April 2004 in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico by the Comité Fronterizo de Obrer@s (CFO) and North Country Fair Trade (NCFT). The business is being established to provide employment to women who lost their jobs in big maquiladora companies in Piedras Negras. Those maquiladoras made clothing for Levi Strauss, Dickies y several other brands. They closed out and moved their operations to locations where wages were lower. Dignity & Justice is a pilot project that seeks to create a model for worker management and ownership of production businesses operated by dismissed workers.
The small business was legally established under the Maquiladora Export Program and other NAFTA regulations. We utilize that legal framework to develop a just binational trade model. The workers of Dignity & Justice are often earning up to 100 percent more of what the big global corporations pay in Mexico. We began very modestly with a small group of former maquiladora women workers. In the first three years of operations more than ten families benefited from the work of D&J. In 2007 we are creating a second shop of Dignity & Justice. We invite you to invest in this expansion of the business. Currently we are making organic cotton t-shirts, and tote bags, as well as the same products using conventional cotton. We began expanding our product line by producing samples of sweatshirts. Our products are now being distributed in the local Mexican market. Read more: The D&J project. A more detailed description of Dignity & Justice Maquiladora Co.
