Hace mucho calor,
la pobreza está tierrosa.
Aquí los terregales tienen fama,
común es la pobreza y el calor.
Le dije a mi supervisor en la línea:
¿Por qué me dices "una chela"? Me llamo Chela.
Ahora vives en México,
¿puedes aprender tanto español?

It's a hot climate and poor and dusty.
The dust is famous here,
the poverty and heat common.
I told my shift supervisor
why do you call me Chelsea my name is Chela.
You're living in Mexico now,
can learn that much Spanish?

El mejor sitio en esta ciudad está debajo del árbol.
No tiene paredes. Vientos.
Lo malo es la brisa.
Hablaremos. La gente está de pie aprendiendo a dirigirse un@s otr@s,
treinta, cuarenta, cincuenta a la vez
Es ancestral, desesperante,
Es el borde del desfiladero

The best room in this town is the space under the tree.

This one man is from Vera Cruz. It means truth and green
and cross and Cortez.
He's got big arms and shows them off, wishing
there was something he could do with them.
He's missing front teeth.
He's a favorite.
We chant his name, "Enyo!" "Enyo!" He steps forth
and speaks like a musician that plays while he's still cold and you can hear every note as he passes from cold to hot.

First he's speaking but its just silence.
He's trying to make sense for us because none of us can make sense alone and we need to do it again and again,
start from scratch, every week.
Then he smiles with a thought and starts to fall into his own thoughts,
falling into what's right there.
People start to laugh
with pleasure at his candor.
A great speaker.

Los hombres se encabronaron por el acoso sexual a las mujeres
y el abuso de las embarazadas
Luego se exasperaron cuando Lucía abortó en la línea
junto a un arnés,
y cuando un camión de la empresa atropelló a Leonor con su nonato de seis meses.
Las mujeres entonces actuaron e hicieron historia:
un paro en Arneses

The men became angry because of the sexual harassment of women
and the harassment of pregnant workers.
Then the men reached a crisis when Lucía miscarried
on the factory floor
and a company bus hit Leona when she was 6 months pregnant.
Then the women took action and made history-
the strike in Alcoa.
